Caiphus Nyoka's family relieved one of his killers finally imprisoned

JOHANNESBURG - The family of slain anti-apartheid activist, Caiphus Nyoka, said they were relieved that one of his killers has finally been imprisoned.

On Thursday, the Pretoria High Court sentenced former apartheid police officer, Johan Marais to 15 years behind bars.

On 24 August 1987, Marais and his colleagues fatally shot Nyoka multiple times outside his Daveyton home.

It’s been 38 years since Nyoka was brutally killed in front of his family.

His sisters, who had given up on finding justice for their brother, were in tears when the sentencing was read out.

Alegria Nyoka said that her brother’s spirit could finally rest.

"The sentence of 15 years, we accept it. We have mixed feelings because my parents died without knowing this truth."

While Marais begins his life in prison, the three men he was with on the day of the incident are still fighting for their freedom.

They are due back in court on 1 September.
